The Language of the Work

Jérôme Scullino’s portrait work occupies the space between formal portraiture, psychological study, and material object. Working primarily in monochrome and mixed media, he creates portraits that strip away environment, performance, and decorative context in order to concentrate on presence.

His images are built through proximity, scale, gesture, and touch. A hand on a shoulder, a child resting into a sibling, a mother enclosing her daughter, a rider beneath the body of a horse — these are not narrative details but structural elements. In Scullino’s work, relationship becomes composition. The bond itself becomes the form.

Rather than pursuing spontaneity or lifestyle realism, Scullino works in a controlled studio environment where distraction is removed and the subject is allowed to emerge with emotional clarity. His portraits do not seek to flatter or dramatize. They ask what remains when the performance of being photographed falls away.

Photography combined with encaustic — beeswax, oil and pigment. Built by hand, each piece is singular.
